The opening ceremony of the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris was a historic and vibrant celebration, marking the first time a Paralympic opening ceremony took place outside of a stadium. Held on August 28, 2024, the event unfolded at the iconic Place de la Concorde,

with a stunning parade of athletes along the Champs-Élysées, a departure from traditional stadium settings.

The ceremony began with a powerful entrance by Theo Curin, a French Paralympic swimmer, who declared, “Welcome to Paris!” against a backdrop of French colors filling the sky, courtesy of the Patrouille de France’s aerial display. The parade of athletes featured 165 delegations, starting with Afghanistan and concluding with the French team, accompanied by the classic tune “Les Champs-Élysées.”

Artistic performances during the ceremony were equally stirring. French artist Lucky Love performed “My Ability,” and a dance piece symbolized societal prejudices and the journey to overcoming them. The French National Anthem, “La Marseillaise,” was performed as the flag was raised, while the Eiffel Tower illuminated the Parisian night.

Speeches by key figures, including Tony Estanguet, President of the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee, and Andrew Parsons, President of the International Paralympic Committee, highlighted the importance of the Paralympic movement. Parsons emphasized the athletes’ competitive spirit and their role in advocating for the rights of the 1.3 billion people with disabilities worldwide.
