not gonna lie, this was quite saying yes, but I’m Home happy and on the way up so

So, I had what was supposed to be a routine haematology appointment. You know, go in, talk blood stuff, go home. Simple. Except my blood had other plans.
The haematologist took one look at me (and probably my blood results) and said, “Right, off to A&E with you for some blood tests.” And I thought, okay, no big deal. Bit of poking, a little waiting, maybe a biscuit if I’m lucky.
Well… next thing I know, I’m being rushed into resus. Not exactly the spa day I had in mind.
Turns out, my haemoglobin (that’s the stuff in red blood cells that carries oxygen) had dropped to 23. Yep, twenty-three. For context, a normal level for women is usually around 120–160. Mine had basically left the building. My red blood cells were being attacked and wiped out like it was some kind of microscopic action movie going on inside me.
So, what did the doctors do? They rolled up with three blood transfusions like it was a Formula 1 pit stop. My body was running on fumes, and the refuel was immediate.
Here’s where it gets fun (well, medically fascinating): to make red blood cells, your body needs two very important things — vitamin B12 and folic acid. Think of them as the recipe ingredients for a nice, healthy batch of blood. Mine? Practically nonexistent. I was running a full kitchen with no eggs or flour. No wonder everything was falling apart.
So now I’m on new meds, a vitamin-packed diet (hello, leafy greens), and getting weekly blood tests to keep an eye on things. Basically, I’m a human science experiment — but in a good way.
As for the haematologist? No phone call yet. And in hospital world, no news is good news (we hope).
Let’s put it this way: if you ever want to scare your kids into eating a balanced diet, just read them this bedtime story. Forget monsters under the bed — nothing terrifies like the words “Your blood cells are under attack.”
So now I’m on a first-name basis with spinach, B12 is my new bestie, and I’ve learned the hard way that your body really notices when it’s missing key ingredients.
Lesson of the day? Eat your greens. Take your vitamins. And don’t ignore weird tiredness — your blood might be throwing in the towel.
Would you like a shorter version too? Or maybe one to post on social media?
