Have you ever had surgery? What for?

Let me take you back to when I was seven years old — a time of school lunches, glittery pencils, and, oh yeah… hamstring surgery.
Yep. While most kids were busy learning how to ride bikes or master their times tables, I was rolling into an operating theatre like a VIP patient (minus the red carpet, plus a snazzy hospital gown that tied at the back and never quite covered my dignity).
Why the Surgery?
So, here’s the scoop: I have cerebral palsy. That means my muscles sometimes like to do their own thing — stiff when they should be chill, tight when they should be stretchy. Think of it like your muscles always being at a party you weren’t invited to.
My hamstrings were the biggest divas of them all. Instead of behaving and helping me walk smoothly, they were throwing constant tantrums, pulling tight, and making it hard for me to move properly.
Doctors took one look and said, “Yep. Those hamstrings need a talking-to.”
Translation: surgery.
Cue the Operating Room…
At seven, the idea of surgery was terrifying. I thought maybe they’d unscrew my legs and pop in new ones, like Mr. Potato Head. Turns out, it wasn’t quite that dramatic — but it did involve being wheeled into a chilly room with a lot of very serious adults wearing masks (before that was a fashion trend).
One minute I was counting backwards from 10 like they told me to…
Ten… nine… eight…
Next thing I knew, I was waking up with bandages, a sore leg, and a craving for hospital jelly.
Recovery: The Not-So-Glorious Bit
Post-surgery, I had to learn how to use my legs all over again. I basically became a tiny, determined version of Bambi on ice. There were walkers, physio sessions, and more stickers from nurses than I could ever fit on a sticker chart.
And let me tell you, physio is no joke. It’s like being coached by someone who smiles sweetly while making you do stretches that feel like your muscles are auditioning for Cirque du Soleil.
But slowly, things got better. My hamstrings chilled out. My walking improved. And I gained a story that would follow me for life — one that sounds a bit wild when I casually drop into conversation, “Oh yeah, I had surgery at seven. No biggie.”
What I Learned (Other Than How to Rock a Hospital Gown)
Cerebral palsy might throw some curveballs, but it doesn’t stop the show. Hospital jelly is weirdly good. Kids are way stronger than people think. And when life pulls your hamstrings, sometimes you just have to stretch, smile, and keep stepping forward — even if those steps look wobbly at first.
So next time your muscles feel a bit cranky, just be glad they’re not my hamstrings circa 2000-something.
Because trust me — they were drama queens.
