How do you express your gratitude?
You know that feeling when someone holds the door open for you, or remembers how you take your tea (milk first, obviously)? It’s such a small thing, but it sticks. It makes you feel seen, like, “Hey—I matter.”

Gratitude isn’t always about big grand gestures. In fact, for me, it’s the tiniest moments that have meant the most. And honestly? Learning to say “thank you” out loud—really say it—has made life a whole lot lighter.
Why I Used to Hold Back
For the longest time, I kept my feelings to myself. Whether it was because I didn’t want to get too soppy or I worried it might make things awkward, I’d just think thank you in my head and carry on.
But guess what? People can’t read your mind.
Whether it was my family supporting me through hospital stays, a friend checking in after a tough physio session, or my teacher adapting PE lessons so I could actually enjoy them—it deserved more than just a quiet nod or a polite smile.
So, I decided to make a change.
The Day I Said It Out Loud
I remember the first time I properly thanked someone—really took a moment, looked them in the eye, and said, “I just wanted to say how much I appreciate what you did for me.”
It was my best mate. She’d rearranged her entire day just to come with me to an appointment I was nervous about. She didn’t think it was a big deal. But to me? It was everything.
She teared up. I teared up. We were both standing there in the Tesco car park like we were in the middle of some cheesy movie. But it felt amazing.
Gratitude Doesn’t Have to Be Fancy
You don’t need glittery cards or long speeches. A simple message. A text. Even a quick “Hey, just wanted to say thank you for being you” goes a long way.
Here are a few easy ways I try to show gratitude now:
Voice notes. I leave little “thanks for today, I loved hanging out” messages after meetups. Sticky notes. If I’m visiting someone, I sometimes leave a cheeky thank-you note on their fridge. Random compliments. Noticing the good in people and saying it out loud has become a habit I love.
Why Gratitude Is Kind of Magic
It flips your whole perspective. Suddenly you’re not just dragging yourself through the day—you’re noticing the kindness around you. The way your support worker remembered your routine. The friend who made you laugh when you needed it most. The stranger who smiled at you on a hard morning.
When you express it, you spread it. People feel good, and it often circles back to you in ways you never expect.
Your Turn—Let’s Get Mushy
So, here’s a little challenge: think of someone who’s made your life a little brighter lately. Doesn’t have to be a big deal. Just someone who showed up, helped out, or made you smile.
Now—tell them. Text them, call them, or scribble a note. Let them know they matter. Trust me, it’ll mean more than you think.
And if you’re reading this—thank YOU. Seriously. For showing up, being curious, and sharing a bit of this wild ride we call life with me.
