Let the Dead Sleep by Michael Wood hooked me with a question:

What would you do if someone you loved was running out of time and needed answers that only you could find?

At first glance, this looks like a classic cold case thriller. A decades-old murder investigation, unanswered questions, and a determination to finally uncover the truth. But after finishing the audiobook, I can honestly say this is so much more than a murder mystery.

What surprised me most was how emotional the story became.

While the investigation itself is gripping, the heart of the book lies in the relationships. The story explores grief, family, loss, and the impact a single tragedy can have on people many years later. As secrets begin to surface and old wounds are reopened, I found myself becoming just as invested in the characters as I was in the mystery itself.

One of the things I loved most was the way every answer seemed to lead to another question. Just when I thought I understood where the story was heading, another piece of the puzzle appeared. It created that wonderful feeling where you tell yourself you’ll stop after one more chapter, only to find yourself still listening hours later because you need to know what happens next.

The audiobook narration deserves a special mention. The narrator captured both the suspense of the investigation and the emotional weight of the story beautifully. The quieter moments hit just as hard as the dramatic ones, making it incredibly easy to become immersed in the world and the characters.

What I wasn’t expecting was how often I found myself smiling despite the heavy subject matter. Alongside the mystery and emotional moments are small flashes of humour and humanity that make the characters feel real. These lighter moments provide the perfect balance and stop the story from becoming overwhelmingly dark.

If you enjoy cold case mysteries, investigative journalism, family secrets, and stories that keep you guessing until the very end, this book is well worth adding to your list. However, if you’re expecting a straightforward thriller, be prepared for something with far more emotional depth than you might anticipate.

Looking back, I think what stayed with me most wasn’t the mystery itself. It was the urgency behind it. The feeling that time matters. That answers matter. That sometimes the people we love deserve the truth, even if finding it means reopening old wounds.

Let the Dead Sleep is easily one of the best thrillers I’ve read this year and one of the best books I’ve discovered through Audible’s Included catalogue. I came for the mystery, but I stayed for the people.
