Not so long ago as part of a course I was lucky enough to be invited to a behind the scenes tour of the Southbank Centre.

No, I’m not going to lie I have been to the Royal Festival hall a number of times and helped out with a number of different events but it’s not until you go on a tour like this you realise –

One, how lucky we are to have a venue like this on our doorstep.

Two, even though you’ve worked at a building a number of times there is always things you can learn.

Three, how uncultured you are – haha! I probably should have listened a bit more in my history lessons at school!


In my eyes this was the most impressive part of the tour, this is the auditorium hosting events such as orchestral, pop concerts, conferences and graduation ceremonies.

Also The Royal Festival Hall stage is now licensed for weddings and civil partnership ceremonies.

When we was in the lift we was told that the design on the carpet was meant to represent something, that’s when I told them that to me the design looked like sound waves.- I was right, but wait for it the tour guide then says that when the carpet was laid the designer wasn’t entirely happy with it.

As he comes back from lunch he was constantly thinking something was missing within the design so out of curiosity he put his tangerine on the floor and that is why there are circles on the carpet. I found this hilarious when we were told but it’s true.


People just to let you know I do not have some weird obsession with profit it was just a fact we were told that I found quite funny.

As we go up to look at where performers warm up, get changed, chill out AKA – the dressing rooms – on the walls they have photographs and drawings of all the different who have preformed there.
