Describe your most memorable vacation.

The holiday that taught me courage comes with feathers (and a beak)
If youāve ever doubted your inner bravery, I suggest booking a trip to Mexico and coming face-to-beak with a cockatiel. Thatās exactly what I didāand let me tell you, I returned a changed woman.
This wasnāt just any holiday. This was the holiday. The sun was shining, the food was spicy, and I was absolutely glowingānot from a tan, but from sheer personal pride. Because while other people were sipping margaritas and snapping selfies, I was out here conquering fears⦠one feathered creature at a time.
š¦ Meet the Unexpected Stars of My Trip: The Birds
Now, let me be honest with you: Iāve never exactly been the āletās go pet the wildlifeā type. My idea of a nature encounter used to be watching David Attenborough from the safety of my sofa. But something about that Mexican sunshine hit different. I was in a whole new mindsetāvacation mode activated. Brave mode⦠well, loading.
The resort had this gorgeous garden full of wildlife encountersābeautiful birds, colourful parrots, and yes, cockatiels with personalities sassier than mine before my morning cuppa. One minute I was cautiously admiring from a distance, and the next, I was standing there, holding a bird. On purpose. Willingly.
I wish I could tell you I looked calm and serene like Snow White in a Disney film, but honestly, I was trying to smile while also whispering, āplease donāt poop on meā under my breath.
Spoiler: it didnāt poop. Victory.
š Awkward Moments & Unexpected Wins
There was one moment where a giant parrot shuffled up my arm like it was on a runway and decided my head was its new perch. I froze, obviously, because what do you do when youāve suddenly become Bird Heathrow?
A little crowd gathered. People were snapping photos like I was part of the entertainment. I mean, if youāre going to panic in public, at least do it in paradise, right?
But hereās the plot twist: I loved it. All of it. The awkward flapping, the squeals (from me, not the bird), and the way the staff cheered me on like Iād just wrestled a crocodile.
Okay, fineāit was just a parrot. But in that moment? I felt like Indiana Jones with feathers.
š Why This Holiday Meant So Much More
I know it sounds silly to say, āI held a bird, and now Iām a new person,ā but honestly? I kind of am. That trip wasnāt just about sun and tacos (though, letās be honest, the tacos were life-changing). It was about pushing myself, trying something new, and proving that fear doesnāt get to boss me around.
Thereās a kind of magic in doing something that once scared youāeven if it comes with claws and a beak.
I came home from Mexico feeling braver, bolder, and full of stories Iāll never forget. And while the photos mostly show me awkwardly grinning while clutching a cockatiel like itās made of TNT, every one of them makes me laugh. And so proud.
