Going into this one, I expected plenty of twists. After all, Freida McFadden has built a reputation for keeping readers guessing. What I didn’t expect was just how many times I would change my mind about who was responsible.

If you’ve ever read a thriller and convinced yourself you’ve solved the mystery, only to discover you’re completely wrong, then The Boyfriend by Freida McFadden might be the book for you.

At first, I was certain I knew exactly where the story was heading.

Then I accused someone else.

Then someone else.

By the halfway point, I was questioning practically every character that appeared on the page.

One of the things I enjoyed most was the before-and-now timeline. The dual timeline added tension throughout the story and kept me turning pages because I constantly felt as though I was missing an important piece of the puzzle.

Every chapter seemed to introduce a new possibility or make me doubt a theory I’d been convinced about just moments earlier. It’s the kind of thriller that encourages you to play detective, only to pull the rug out from under you when you start feeling confident.

There was one particular moment that made everything suddenly click into place for me. A seemingly small detail made me stop and rethink everything I’d read up to that point. Looking back, the clues were there, but I was so focused on my own theories that I completely overlooked what was right in front of me.

What really worked for me was the pacing. The story moved quickly, making it difficult to put down. Every time I thought I’d read just one more chapter, I found myself reading several more.

The ending was the biggest surprise of all. Even though I’d spent the entire book trying to work out the truth, I still wasn’t prepared for how everything unfolded. It’s one of those endings that makes you immediately think back through the story and reconsider everything you thought you knew.

Overall, The Boyfriend delivered exactly what I want from a thriller: suspense, plenty of red herrings, constant second-guessing, and an ending that genuinely caught me off guard.

If you’re looking for a fast-paced thriller that will keep you guessing until the very end, this is definitely worth adding to your reading list.
