When I first picked up Clockwork Angel, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. I’d heard so much about the Shadowhunter world over the years, but somehow I’d never actually taken the plunge. Looking back now, I can safely say I understand why this series has such a dedicated fanbase.

The story follows Tessa Gray, who arrives in Victorian London expecting to reunite with her brother, only to find herself pulled into a world she never knew existed. What follows is a mix of mystery, danger, secrets, and plenty of unanswered questions.

One of the biggest strengths of this book is Tessa herself. I connected with her almost immediately and found myself completely invested in her journey. As she tried to understand what was happening around her, I felt like I was discovering the Shadowhunter world alongside her. She’s curious, determined, and easy to root for, which made her a fantastic introduction to the series.

The Victorian London setting added so much atmosphere to the story. From the moment I started listening, I felt immersed in the world Cassandra Clare had created. There was enough mystery to keep me engaged, while the gradual introduction to Shadowhunters, Downworlders, demons, and the wider world never felt overwhelming.

What surprised me most wasn’t the fantasy elements, though. It was the characters.

By the end of the book, I found myself far more interested in the people than the action. I loved Tessa, quickly became Team Jem, and spent a large part of the book trying to work out what exactly was going on with Will. While some mysteries are introduced early on, I found the character dynamics and hidden motivations even more intriguing.

There were a few moments where I felt slightly confused by certain reveals, particularly towards the end when a lot of information is uncovered in a short space of time. However, rather than putting me off, it left me eager to continue the series and find out what happens next.

Perhaps the biggest compliment I can give Clockwork Angel is that I finished it with more questions than answers. I want to know more about Tessa, more about Will, and more about the secrets that are clearly still waiting to be uncovered.

Overall, Clockwork Angel was an enjoyable introduction to both The Infernal Devices trilogy and the Shadowhunter world as a whole. While it wasn’t quite a five-star read for me, it absolutely did its job of making me want to continue the series.
