If someone had told me a few months ago that I’d be happily making my way through a series about a Welsh village policeman, I’d probably have laughed.

Yet here I am…

Three books into the Constable Evans series and already planning to pick up the next one.

There’s just something about Llanfair that keeps pulling me back.

Maybe it’s the rolling Welsh countryside. Maybe it’s the close-knit village where everyone seems to know everyone else’s business. Or maybe it’s Constable Evans himself, who’s quickly becoming one of my favourite detectives to spend time with.

Whatever it is, it’s working.

Welcome Back to Llanfair

One of my favourite things about this series is that returning to Llanfair genuinely feels like visiting somewhere familiar.

You know those books where the setting is so well written that you feel like you could walk around it yourself?

That’s exactly what Rhys Bowen has created.

The stone cottages.

The winding roads.

The little bridge over the river.

The church sitting proudly in the middle of the village.

It’s the kind of place I’d happily visit… preferably when there isn’t a murder to investigate.

Constable Evans Is Just So Easy to Like

Not every detective needs to be grumpy, haunted by their past, or breaking every rule in the book.

Constable Evans is refreshingly… normal.

He cares about people.

He actually listens.

He thinks before he acts.

And because of that, I find myself rooting for him every single time.

He’s not trying to be the cleverest person in the room.

He’s just trying to do the right thing.

There’s something incredibly comforting about that.

So… Did I Enjoy It?

Absolutely.

In fact, I think this might be my favourite book in the series so far.

The mystery kept me interested from beginning to end without relying on constant twists or over-the-top drama.

Instead, it trusted the characters and the setting to do most of the heavy lifting.

Sometimes that’s all a story really needs.

Let’s Talk About the Audiobook

As most of you know, I mainly read through audiobooks, so the narrator can completely make or break the experience.

Thankfully, this one absolutely nailed it.

The narration suited the cosy atmosphere perfectly, and before I knew it, I’d completely lost myself in another visit to Llanfair.

It felt less like someone reading a book and more like sitting down while someone told me a really good story.

Those are always my favourite audiobooks.

Why I’m Enjoying This Series So Much

I think what surprises me most is that these books are the complete opposite of what I usually read.

Normally you’ll find me buried in fantasy worlds, psychological thrillers, or books with enough plot twists to leave my head spinning.

This series doesn’t do that.

Instead, it slows everything down.

It lets the characters breathe.

It lets the mystery unfold naturally.

And honestly…

I’m really enjoying that change of pace.

Sometimes you don’t need a story that’s racing towards the finish line.

Sometimes you just want one that invites you to stay a little longer.

Final Thoughts

I think I’ve officially reached the point where Llanfair feels like somewhere I’d happily keep returning to.

Rhys Bowen has created a series that’s warm, engaging, and incredibly easy to sink into.

It won’t be the fastest-paced mystery you’ll ever read.

It won’t leave you terrified to switch the lights off.

But if you’re looking for a detective you’ll genuinely care about, a beautiful Welsh setting, and a mystery that’s as comforting as it is entertaining, I don’t think you can go far wrong.

Now excuse me while I go and start the next Constable Evans book…
