It started like any normal Tuesday—woke up late, made tea, forgot I’d run out of milk, drank it anyway. Bit dramatic, bit tragic. The usual.
I got to work, already flustered, only to find Karen from accounts had again left her weird tuna salad in the fridge like a crime scene no one wants to solve. The office smelled like betrayal.
Now, I’m not saying I was at the end of my rope, but the rope was fraying, on fire, and I was holding it with one hand while smiling like, “No, I’m fine. Just thriving.”
Enter: Gary. My manager. Professional meeting-maker. Calls a “quick catch-up” that somehow always lasts 47 minutes and includes 13 bullet points that could’ve been an email.
This particular meeting? He looks me dead in the eye and says,
“I just feel like you could bring a bit more sparkle to the team.”
More. Sparkle.
As if I’m some kind of underperforming fairy godmother.
I blinked. Once. Twice. And then I said,
“Okay, Gary, you want sparkle? How about this—I’m done. Consider this my glittery exit.”
He thought I was joking. I was not.
I left that meeting, walked straight out the front door, heart pounding like a drum solo, and bought myself a pastry I absolutely couldn’t afford. Sat on a park bench, crumbs everywhere, slightly shaking—but also? Free.
Now don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t a walk-off-into-the-sunset moment. I cried later. A lot. I had a “what have I done” panic followed by a “can I live off toast and vibes?” budgeting session.
But in the middle of all that chaos, there was this teeny, tiny spark. Not the kind Gary wanted. The real kind. Mine.
And that’s the thing, isn’t it? Sometimes you don’t know how far you’ve bent until you snap back and think,
“Why was I letting people dim me in the first place?”
I didn’t lose it that day.
I found it. Me.
So now I ask you:
What was your “sparkle moment”?
The time you stood up, walked out, spoke up, or finally chose you?
Let’s talk about it in the comments. Go on—I’ll bring the biscuits.
Wanna see what happens next? Should she start a new job, start a business, or start eating pastries professionally? đź‘€
Let me know if you’re up for a follow-on chapter—I’ve got ideas and a whole lot more sass where that came from.
