Every now and then, a book comes along that reminds me exactly why I love reading fantasy.

Fear the Flames by Olivia Rose Darling wasn’t just a good read. It wasn’t even just a five-star read. Somehow, over the course of a few hundred pages, it became my favourite book of the year.

Going into this book, I expected dragons, adventure, and a little romance. What I didn’t expect was to become completely invested in the characters, their struggles, and the journey to reclaim what had been stolen from them.

The story follows a heroine determined to take back her dragons and fight for what is rightfully hers. From the very beginning, there is a strong sense of purpose driving the story forward, but what truly kept me turning the pages was the emotional depth behind every decision and every sacrifice.

One of my favourite things about Fear the Flames was the way the dragons were woven into the story. They never felt like background decoration or a fantasy checklist item. They mattered. Their presence shaped the world, the stakes, and the characters themselves. As someone who can never resist a dragon story, this book delivered everything I hoped for and more.

The pacing was another pleasant surprise. While some fantasy books take a long time to find their footing, this one constantly gave me reasons to keep reading. Every time I thought I had figured out where the story was heading, it managed to pull me further into the world and raise the stakes even higher.

Then there were the characters.

Without spoiling anything, this is one of those books where I genuinely cared about what happened to the people on the page. Their victories felt earned, their losses mattered, and their relationships added emotional weight to every major moment. By the time I reached the final chapters, I was completely invested.

Let’s just say it turned a very good book into a five-star book.

The final stretch had me glued to my headphones, desperate to find out what would happen next. It delivered the action, emotion, and payoff I had been hoping for, while also leaving me wanting more from this world.
