For me, one of the biggest strengths of the Constable Evans series has always been its setting. Llanfair isn’t just the backdrop to the story – it has its own personality. The quiet Welsh village, its close-knit community and the familiar faces all help create the cosy atmosphere that keeps me coming back for more.

This time around, the mystery drew me in from the very beginning. Rather than relying on constant action or dramatic twists, the story takes its time, revealing clues little by little. I found myself paying attention to every conversation and every new development, trying to piece everything together before Constable Evans did. Just when I thought I had worked it out, the story nudged me in another direction.

One thing I’ve always appreciated about Rhys Bowen’s writing is how well she balances the mystery with the characters’ everyday lives. Evans isn’t simply solving crimes; he’s a believable detective with relationships, responsibilities and challenges outside of the investigation. That balance makes the series feel authentic and gives you plenty of reasons to care about the people at the heart of each story.

As someone who listens to most of my books as audiobooks, I was pleased that this one translated so well into audio. The narration captured the warmth of the Welsh setting beautifully and made it easy to become completely immersed in the story. It felt like the perfect companion for this style of mystery.

If you’re expecting a fast-paced thriller packed with explosive action, this probably isn’t the book for you. However, if you enjoy mysteries that focus on strong characters, clever clues and a wonderfully atmospheric setting, Evan Can Wait is well worth your time. Sometimes the most satisfying mysteries aren’t the ones that race to the finish line—they’re the ones that let you enjoy every step of the journey.
