There are some series that feel like coming home every time you pick up the next book, and the Constable Evans series is definitely one of those for me. Evans to Betsy was another enjoyable visit to Llanfair, this time giving one of the series’ most memorable characters a chance to step into the spotlight.

Betsy has always been a character I’ve enjoyed throughout the series, so I was pleased to see her play such a central role in this story. It made this instalment feel a little different while still keeping everything I’ve come to love about these books. The familiar village setting, the witty humour and the close-knit community all return, creating the comforting atmosphere that makes this series such an easy one to recommend.

As with the previous books, the mystery kept me engaged from beginning to end. There were plenty of twists to make me question my theories, but nothing felt overly complicated or unrealistic. It’s the kind of mystery that lets you enjoy trying to solve it alongside Constable Evans without becoming confusing.

I listened to the audiobook, and once again it was a fantastic experience. The narrator captured both the warmth and personality of the characters while bringing the Welsh setting to life. Each character felt distinct, making it easy to follow the story and become completely immersed in the investigation.

One of the reasons I continue returning to this series is because it strikes such a great balance between cosy and suspenseful. The books never rely on graphic violence or shocking moments to keep your attention. Instead, they focus on strong characters, clever mysteries and a setting that feels as important as the people living in it.

Although each mystery stands on its own, I would still recommend reading the Constable Evans books in order. Watching the characters develop over the course of the series adds another layer of enjoyment that you don’t get if you jump in halfway through.

Overall, Evans to Betsy was another strong instalment that reminded me why I enjoy this series so much. While it wasn’t quite a five-star read for me, it came very close. It delivered everything I look for in a cosy mystery—engaging characters, an intriguing plot and a wonderful sense of place.
