I’ve just finished The Divorce by Freida McFadden, and I needed a little time to get my head around this one. By the ending, there was so much to piece together that I had to talk through the biggest reveals to understand how everything connected. Don’t worry—this review is completely spoiler-free!
The story follows Naomi as her marriage to Jeremy falls apart. With another woman, Veronica, involved and their young son Teddy caught in the middle, the situation is already messy. But as the story develops, it becomes clear that there is much more happening beneath the surface.
One of the hardest things was working out who to believe. You’re trying to understand the characters’ actions while also questioning how much of the truth you actually have. Each revelation changes the way you look at what came before.
I’ve been working my way through Freida McFadden’s books, so I’m used to her turning a story upside down. With The Divorce, though, I finished with questions about how the main pieces fitted together. I needed to stop and untangle who knew what, when they knew it, and what that meant for everyone involved.
Without giving anything away, the final situation deserves a second thought. Where the characters end up is only part of it; what they know—or don’t know—makes a difference to how you interpret the ending. Once I had worked through that, the conclusion made more sense to me.
This is a difficult book to discuss without revealing too much, and I wouldn’t want to spoil those discoveries for anyone. What I can say is that it gave me plenty to talk about after I’d finished listening. It certainly wasn’t a book I could close and immediately put out of my mind.
Have you read The Divorce? Did the ending fall into place for you straight away, or did you need to piece it together afterwards too? Keep the comments spoiler-free for anyone who hasn’t read it yet!
